The role of a proofreader
The proofreader reads the printer’s proofs for consistency in usage and layout and checks for errors subject to the production editor’s brief. The role of the proofreader is to check that the editor, designer and typesetter have each done a good job, and use judgement in marking amendments to minimise costs and delays (SfEP, 2008)
The requirements of a professional proofreader
An excellent command of the English language and a keen eye are essential, but are not the only skills required. As well as the ability to adhere to deadlines and communicate with editors and authors, the experienced proofreader will use judgement and restraint in ‘leaving good enough alone’. A good proofreader with also have in-depth knowledge of their subject area/s, and will have undertaken appropriate training.
